GSK acquires BMS's R&D HIV assets

GlaxoSmithKline plc announced that its global HIV business, ViiV Healthcare, has reached two separate agreements with Bristol-Myers Squibb, to acquire its late-stage HIV R&D assets; and to acquire Bristol-Myers Squibb’s portfolio of preclinical and discovery stage HIV research assets.

These potential therapies have novel modes of action and would offer significant new treatment options to patients with HIV. In addition to being developed as standalone treatment options, these new assets complement ViiV Healthcare’s existing portfolio and therefore offer multiple opportunities for development as combination therapies.

The late-stage asset purchase comprises an upfront payment of $317 million, followed by development and first commercial sale milestones of up to $518M, and tiered royalties on sales. The purchase of preclinical and discovery stage research assets comprises an upfront payment of $33 million, followed by development and first commercial sales milestones of up to $587M, and further consideration contingent on future sales performance.

Johnson & Johnson On New Global Commitments

Building on its 25-year legacy in the fight against HIV/AIDS, Johnson & Johnson announced four new public-private partnerships through its Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies to significantly reduce the burden of HIV incidence, especially among adolescent girls, who make up 74 percent of new HIV infections among adolescents in sub-Saharan Africa. Announced on World AIDS Day, these new initiatives include collaborations with the U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI) and the International Partnership for Microbicides (IPM), all focused on efforts to stem the tide of HIV infection and empower women and girls in HIV prevention.

The initiatives include: becoming a major partner supporting PEPFAR’s DREAMS initiative, a collaboration with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Girl Effect and others, to dramatically reduce HIV infections among adolescent girls and young women in 10 sub-Saharan African countries; CHAI and IPM, which focus on increasing access to simplified HIV treatments and advancing innovative tools to help prevent sexual transmission of HIV in women and girls. A fourth initiative, Connect for Life™, is a new program that is designed to enable local health professionals in resource-limited settings to improve diagnosis and treatment of those living with HIV and tuberculosis.

The new partnerships build on Johnson & Johnson’s long-standing commitment to battle HIV through a broad portfolio of transformational medicines and combination therapies; history of novel programs and partnerships to increase access to HIV medicines and care; collaborative research on innovative tools and treatments; strategic philanthropy partnerships that have resulted in significant gains in the elimination of mother-to-child transmission of HIV; and, issue advocacy at high-level forums and with leading stakeholders in the fight against HIV.

Roche expands cobas 4800 System menu

Roche announced the commercial availability of the cobas HIV-1, HCV and HCV Genotyping (GT) assays in countries accepting the CE mark. These new molecular diagnostic assays increase the available menu on the cobas 4800 System, further improving efficiency and flexibility that allows laboratories to deliver results for rapid clinical decisions.

The new virology assays offer the latest generation of performance with dual target technology for HIV-1 and dual probe technology for HCV. All of the new virology assays can run simultaneously on the cobas 4800 System, with optimized sample processing volumes for streamlining workflow that increases flexibility for patient sample management. With these additions, the cobas 4800 System now has a menu of 12 high medical value IVD assays, making it the ideal solution for a highly efficient laboratory.

The assays launched today will be followed in the coming months by the cobas HBV Test, which will complete the portfolio of viral load monitoring and genotyping assays for the cobas 4800 System.
